BRANCHVILLE - Joseph Randolph Newsome Sr., 68, died Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. in a Franklin hospital. A native of Northampton County, N.C., he was a son of James Lemuel and Mrs. Fannie Smith Newsome. He was a member of Branchville Baptist Church. He was a farmer and a World War I veteran. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Julia Joyner Newsome of Branchville; four daughters, Mrs. Anice Barnette of Richmond, Mrs. Helen Vick of Capron, Mrs. Josie Gay of Seaboard, N.C., and Mrs. Erma Scott of Boykins; a son, Joseph R. Newsome Jr. of Boykins; a brother, Walter A. Newsome of Potecasi, N.C.; a stepson, Robert Wayne Pope; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A funeral was held Thursday at 3 p.m. in McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, by the Rev. Russell Wimmer of Branchville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Linton Grizzard, D.C. Edwards, Joseph W. Washington, H.F. McCoy, Marion Joyner, Reese Withers, Lewis Jordan and Forest Smith.
