Mrs. Martha Caroline Neimeyer, widow of Henry V. Neimeyer, died at her home, in Portsmouth, yesterday morning in her eighty-fourth year. During Nat Turner's insurrection in Southampton county, in 1831, the slaves, under the fanatical leadership of Nat Turner, a negro preacher, murdered a number of people. The sister and a number of other relatives of the deceased were among the victims. Mrs. Neimeyer was then a small child, and her life was saved by the warning of faithful slaves who gave notice of the approach of the murderers and assisted in secreting the family in the woods, where they were hidden for two nights until the danger was past. Mrs. Neimeyer was the daughter of John T. Vaughan, of Bonnie Doon, Southampton county, and was married to the late Henry V. Neimeyer, of Ports- mouth, 60 years ago.
