All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HERBERT LEE NORFLEET Herbert Lee Norfleet, 78, a native of Franklin, died Tuesday night, October 4, in Baltimore, Md., while on a visit to his son, Wilson Norfleet. He had been confined to a hospital there for several days, following a fall, and died in his sleep. Mr. Norfleet was a resident of Havana, Cuba. He was born in Franklin on April 20, 1871, and was the last survivor of ten children of the late Alexander Wilson Norfolk and Indiana Virginia Norfleet, both of whom were closely identified with the early history of the town. He was married in Franklin in 1900 to Bessie M. Atkinson [daughter of A.A.] and Vesuvia E. Moore Atkinson, also among the foremost of Southampton families. Mr. Norfleet was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, in which he served as a volunteer with the Richmond Light Infantry Blues. A student at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, before the War with Spain, he graduated from that institution in 1899 with the degree of B.L. Following his service in Cuba he remained in that country and went into business in Havana. He made Havana his lifetime residence, and was among the best known of the American colony there. He frequently visited in Franklin his sisters, the late Mrs. A.L. Gardner and the late Mrs. John C. Parker. Surviving him are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. W.W. Caswell, Jr., of Havana; a son, Wilson Norfleet of Baltimore; and one grandson and three granddaughters. He was buried on Poplar Spring Cemetery on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. The services were conducted at the grave by Rev. Jean A. Vache, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church assisted by Rev. Randolph L. Gregory of the Franklin Baptist Church. Pallbearers were C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, Franklin Edwards, Dr. Beaman Story, Alexander W. Parker of Richmond, George O. Watkins, John C. Parker, Jr., W.W. Caswell, Jr. of Havana; and Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Henderson, N.C.
