All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LLOYD NURNEY COUNTY MAN DIES IN TRAILER FIRE NEAR SUFFOLK; HAS RELATIVE IN COURTLAND FUNERAL TUESDAY AT NEWSOMS Lloyd Nurney, 36, a Southampton County man, died Sunday morning in a trailer fire near Suffolk. Nurney body was found after the flames subsided in the fire that completely consumed the interior of the house trailer. A World War II veteran, Nurney had been working at the Rountree Dairy, where the fire occurred, for six and seven years. Nurney’s mother, Mrs. Caroline B. Nurney*, and a brother, A.R. Nurney, live in Courtland. He is also survived by two children, Mary Frances and Patricia, two sisters, Mrs. John Smith of Richmond and Mrs. Tony Rainon of New York, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the graveside in the Newsoms Cemetery by the Rev. O.L. Gouchenour, pastor of the Newsoms Methodist Church. Pallbearers Pallbearers were Steve Bryant, Harry Bryant, R.A. Ballard, Leslie Whitehead, Gillette Bryant and W.T. Bryant. A neighbor, Willie J. Teal, first spotted the fire Sunday morning. The blaze apparently started in the bedroom end of the trailer. Nansemond County fireman arrived around 7:15 a.m. to put out the flames. No attempt had been made to save Nurney from the fire, since friends said it had been his habit to leave early Sunday morning. A barn near the trailer caught fire but was quickly extinguished by dairy workers.
