Gideon David Overman, Sr., 76, a former resident of Franklin, died Tuesday, October 22, at 5:55 p.m. in a Norfolk Hospital after a long illness. A native of Wayne County, N.C., he had also lived in Holland and Courtland. He had been a resident of Norfolk for 12 years, residing with his son, Gideon D. Overman, Jr., at 2108 Willowood Drive. Mr. Overman was a retired section foreman with the Southern Railway and Seaboard Air Line Railroad with 45 years of service. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Ella Mae Yates Overman, and the son of the late Joseph R. and Mrs. Julia Arminto Cotton Overman. He was a member of Epworth Methodist Church and of its Wesleymen Bible Class. He was also a member of the Courtland Lodge 85, A.F. & A.M. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Fred R. Moore of Fountain, N.C., Mrs. I. Kelly Howell of Portsmouth, and Mrs. N.T. Duck of Franklin; two sons, Gideon D. Overman, Jr., of Norfolk and Aubrey Yates Overman of Hertford, Conn.; two grandchildren: Mrs. Robert Branch of Bethel, N.C., and Miss Susan Elizabeth Duck of Franklin, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Cox Funeral Home, Norfolk, by Rev. James W. Rush, associate pastor of Epworth Methodist Church, and Rev. Ernest H. Overman, pastor of Hyde Park Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.
