She was 73 years of age and had made her home in Franklin since 1900, being a native of Southampton County, the daughter of the late Irvin and Mrs. Mayab Griffin of Black Creek community. In 1885 she was married to J.B. Owens of Nansemond County who died in 1912. Mrs. Owens is survived by a son, J.R. Owens of Jackson, Miss., and by four daughters, Miss Ruth M. Owens, Mrs. W.O. Bogart and Mrs. L.J. Fisher of Franklin and Mrs. Junius W. Pulley of Courtland, and by ten grandchildren. Besides the immediate family she has five nieces, Mrs. G.C. Niblett of Ivor, Mrs. H. Warren Stephenson, Mrs. J.J. Bristow and Miss Mabel Edwards of Atlanta, and Mrs. P.L. Barrett of Altavista, Va. She was one of Franklin’s best loved citizens, living a quiet, unobtrusive and useful life, but most highly esteemed and appreciated by many friends. The interest and welfare of her church had always claimed her loyal service in the faithful keeping of every obligation of her religion. Joining Black Creek Church as a girl, she had maintained her membership in the Franklin Baptist Church ever since moving to this town, and her splendid work in the Woman’s Missionary Society is perpetuated in the "Helen Owens Circle" of that organization. Funeral services were held from her late home in First Avenue Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by her Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. Gordon L. Price of Courtland and Rev. J.R. Johnson of Galax, Va., in the presence of a large assembly of friends. Interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: D.T. Prince, R.J. Tucker, Dr. A.P. Cutchin, W.B. Simpson, W.O. Bristow, Roger I. Beale, Jno. C. Parker, Jr. and Paul Scarborough. Among relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral here were: Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Niblett and Miss Mabel Edwards of Ivor, Mrs. P.L. Barrett and Miss Frances Barrett of Altavista, Va., Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Stephenson and Mrs. J.J. Bristow of Atlanta, Mrs. R.B.
