Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday Drewryville Methodist Church, burial Drewryville Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** AMOS PERSON POPE DREWRYVILLE - Amos Person Pope, 74, son of Robert A. and Delia Thomas Pope died on January 18, at Duke Hospital. He was a retired rural mail carrier, having served nearly a half century in that capacity. In recent years he served one term as president of the state organization of rural carriers. He was a native of Drewryville, a life-long and devoted member of the Methodist Church at Peete’s Church, one of the oldest churches in the county, and later at Drewryville Methodist when the two churches merged. He was a member of the Board of Stewards and of the choir for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 85 AF and AM in Courtland. He attended V.P.I from 1908 to 1909 and was a member of the Drewryville Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Wilroy Pope; two daughters, Miss Kitty Pope of Drewryville and Mrs. Vernon Tillar of Emporia; two granddaughters, Terry and Kay Tillar; three sisters, Mrs. L.A. Magette of Courtland, Mrs. Gene Brandon of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. E.M. McCall of Blytheville, Ark., two brothers, Dr. T.B. Pope of Petersburg and Beekman Pope of Charleston Heights, S.C. Funeral services were conducted at the church by the Rev. J.S. Peebles, a former pastor, assisted by the Rev. Sparks of Main Street Baptist Church in Emporia. Masonic rites were conducted. Active pallbearers were Robert Pope, Kindred Magette, Thornton Thomas, R.D. Claud, Berkley Grizzard, Allen Harris, Jasper Wilroy and Owen Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were member of the Men’s Bible Class.
