Pope of Newsoms on January 3, 1931, removed from the county one of its most widely known and prominent citizens. Death came after an illness of many months in the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. Howard. The funeral services, held in this home, were conducted by her Pastor, Rev. L.E. Dailey of the Newsoms Baptist Church. The hymn, "Abide with Me," was read by G.C. Picot of Como. Burial was in the Newsoms Cemetery. There was a large attendance and many beautiful floral offerings, the casket being covered with a cluster of white lilies. The body bearers, her own selection, were: Howard Fox, Claude Beaton, R.N. Darden, V.R. Lee, Dr. B.A. Pope, J.B. Everett, J.T. Story and R.B. Story. Mrs. Bettie T. Pope, daughter of Newit and Mary Jane* Harris, was born in Southampton County on January 25, 1852, being at her death more than three score years and ten, almost 79. In her youth she was left an orphan and was for a number of years an inmate of the home of her aunt, her mother’s sister, Mrs. Thomas Fox. From this home she was married to R.P. Pope of Newsoms. Early in her married life she was left a widow with four surviving children, Virginia, Harrison, Newit and Daisy. Bravely she threw herself into the breach, made by the death of husband and father, and most faithfully and heroically did she give herself to the rearing of her children and the managing of the vast estate left to her care. Being of such a gentle and retiring nature, many have marveled at the ability with which she managed her finances. Most successfully did she bring her children to manhood and womanhood, but the passing years took from her Newit, in young manhood, Daisy, (Mrs. Algie Cabell) in young motherhood and a little over a year ago Harrison, the companion of his mother for so many years, was taken. The mother, having been so closely associated with this son, found it hard to give him up and it is certain his going hastened her death. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Virginia Howard, four grandchildren, Virginia, George, Sheridan and Newit Cabell, one great-grandson, G.C. Cabell, Jr., and her sister, Mrs. M.J. Darden, of Petersburg. Mrs. Pope was a loyal member of the Newsoms Baptist Church, having joined this church immediately after its organization. To it she gave the best years and service of her life, being a teacher in its Sunday school until she felt that others should succeed her. She was a regular supporter of the church’s program and was a regular attendant upon all of its services until failing strength and added years brought on their inertia. In her community life she carried out to the letter the Scriptural injunction, "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them," but her sympathetic heart led her in her quiet way to perform many deeds of kindness known only to those in the inner circle of her friends.
