POPE An Estimable Lady Dead George H. Leigh, chief clerk of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, left last night for Southampton County to attend the funeral of his aunt, Mrs. C.R. Pope, who died at her home on Sunday. She was well known and highly respected in that section. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK NEWS GATHERINGS. Caroline & Patrick H. "THORP" entered into a marriage bond 3 Mar 1838. Caroline "THORP" & Benjamin E. POPE entered into a marriage bond 30 Nov 1849. (Southampton Co. M.Reg. pp. 479, 583 & 707) Caroline left will & codicil 18 Apr 1895, proved 19 Aug 1895. She bequeathed in Item 2 to J.J. WOODARD, on conditions, the farm on Meherrin River devised to her by her father Peter EDWARDS. She bequeathed in Item 16 to George H. LEIGH a lot in Roanoke at Commerce & Kirk Sts. (Southampton Co. WB21:674-78) Ben left will & codicils 15 Nov 1879, proved 24 Sep 1881, naming Jefferson J. WOODARD as one of his executors. (Southampton Co. WB20:585-89 &c.) Jefferson Jones WOODARD (1832 - 1907) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. A, 18th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery. In the 1860 Census he appears as a merchant, living adjacent to Ben & Caroline's farm. He is buried in Person's Methodist Church Cemetery, near Drewryville. Peter 2m. Narcissa J. NEWSOM in 1838. Peter left will 26 Apr 1855, proved 15 Aug 1859; executors Benjamin E. POPE and John E. BRIGGS. BRIGGS (ca. 1828 - 1861) was the son of Thomas BRIGGS & Nancy EDWARDS - likely Peter's sister. He was to receive "the old plantation" he then farmed, a number of slaves, and forgiveness of any debts owned to Peter - provided he "support and take good care of his mother Nancy Briggs during her life." Caroline was to receive several slaves & $30,000. The balance of Peter's estate was to be loaned to his widow during her natural life, then pass to Caroline; however, Narcissa renounced all provision made for her in any will left by Peter, though she claimed all rights to which she was entitled as Peter's widow - life rights to 1/3 of his estate. (Southampton Co. WB16:555-56 &c.) Narcissa left will 17 Oct 1866, proved 20 May 1867, leaving her entire estate to the family of Dr. Robert A. GHOLSON. (Southampton Co. WB19:39) Her father's obit ("Richmond Enquirer," Aug. 16, 1859, p. 2) is posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/obits/e363p5ob.txt Caroline's first husband Patrick (1814 - 1849), their son [presumably] Simmons THORPE (1845 - 1848), her parents and John E. BRIGGS (1827 - 1861) and two of his children are buried in an EDWARDS family cemetery. (POWELL) LEIGH. His father's half-brother Dr. George W. MUSGRAVE went to Roanoke 19 Aug 1893 to visit George but was taken ill; he d. 4 Sep 1893 at the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Caroline and Dr. MUSGRAVE's sister Sarah Elizabeth (MUSGRAVE; Mrs. Capt. James Jackson) DARDEN stayed at the hotel during "the illness of their relative" and George LEIGH accompanied them back to Southampton Co., leaving Roanoke 8 Sep 1893. Dr. MUSGRAVE is also buried in Person's Methodist Church Cemetery (MV-III-55). George LEIGH was buried in a LEIGH family cemetery at his birthplace. In 1981 the remains of George, several siblings & their parents were moved to the Thomas Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, Drewryville.
