FRANKLIN PIERCE POPE

   Mr. Franklin P. Pope, one of our county's best and most prominent citizens, 
died at his home near Drewryville on Friday, January 28, at 5 a.m.  Mr. Pope 
was in his sixty-fourth year and had been in very feeble health for some time, 
although the immediate cause of his death was a stroke of paralysis sustained 
on the previous Sunday.  He was a consistent member of Clarksbury M.E. Church 
and was known and respected throughout the county as an honorable and upright 
Christian gentleman.  He was quite a successful farmer and was president of 
the Peoples Bank of Courtland.  For a number of years he was a school trustee 
in Drewryville district, always taking an active interest in public school 
affairs, and it was largely through his efforts that the excellent High school 
building was erected at Drewryville. 

   He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Hattie Drewry*, a daughter of Mr. 
S.B. Drewry of Boykins and a son, Samuel; and by two children of a former 
marriage, Miss Belle Pope and Prof. F.E. Pope, all of Drewryville.  Mrs. 
Walter B. Myrick of the Maney's Neck community, who died about four years ago, 
was a sister of Mr. Pope. 

   The funeral was conducted from his residence on Saturday afternoon at 3 
o'clock in the presence of a large crowd of sympathizing friends and 
neighbors, his pastor, Rev. T.E. Johnson of Boykins, and presiding Elder W.T. 
Green conducting the services.  The interment was made in the family burying 
ground at his home.
