Pope, 70, died Wednesday in a Roanoke Rapids, N.C., hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and the husband of Mrs. Grace D. Pope. His parents were Henry and Mrs. Addie Stephens Pope. He was a retired farmer and prison guard of Southampton Prison Farm. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Turner, and two sons, James Pope and Eldridge L. Pope, all of Boykins; a foster son, Ralph Martin of Roanoke Rapids; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Nurney of Courtland; two brothers, Willie G. Pope of Newsoms and David Pope of Capron; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. Daniel M. Spell, pastor, and the Rev. Russell Wimmer of Branchville Baptist Church. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, with McDowell Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Victor Grizzard, Callis Davis, Howard Simmons, Otis Davis, Homer Dunlow, Alton Overby and Clay Beasley.
