Having stood the operation successfully, hope was held out for his recovery, but having been operated on not many months ago and being ill for no long a time his heart could not stand the strain. Practically all of the last year of his life was spent by all the skill that medical science could furnish. Harrison Pope, born October 22, 1877*, was the oldest son of the late R.P. Pope and Mrs. Bettie T. Pope of Newsoms. His early education was obtained in the home from private tutors. Later he attended Randolph-Macon Academy and Richmond College. Practically all of his life, after completing his education he spent with and for his mother at their country home, Cedar View, near Newsoms. He was a tender and loyal son to his devoted mother. The one passion of his life was hunting and he was a familiar, well known figure as he passed back and forth through this county and eastern North Carolina in quest of game. He perhaps was as skilled in the art and science of hunting as few ever become and it is said by his fellow huntsmen that he was most fair and generous in the sport, always seeking to station comrades of the hunt in the places of advantage. His many friends witness to his large generosity with the immense amount of game he was successful in bagging. Early in life he connected himself with the Newsoms Baptist Church and the burial services were conducted by the Rev. L.E. Dailey, the pastor of this church, assisted by the Rev. R.H. Marks of the Methodist Church. The burial took place from the home of R. Howard, brother-in-law of the deceased, and interment was made in Newsoms Cemetery. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends and the floral tributes were many and beautiful. J.B. Everett, R.B. Story, Dr. B.A. Pope, E.B. Carter, R.A. Bunn, R.N. Darden, E.W. Davis and R.F. Marks were the body bearers. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bettie T. Pope and sister, Mrs. R. Howard of Newsoms. A niece and three nephews also survive him. Among the out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: Miss Lula Pope, Abner Pope and daughters, Nancy and Margaret of Norfolk, Mrs. B.S. Turner, V.R. Leigh and Dr. W.B. Barham of Drewryville, Mrs. Mollie Darden and daughters, Mrs. Boothe and Mrs. Tanner, of Petersburg, and Sheridan Cabell of Dunn, N.C. Harrison Peterson POPE, of Newsoms, farmer, b.
