Pope, Jr., 64, a native of Southampton County, died May 3, 1985, in Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He founded Pope Insurance Agency in 1951, and merged with Manry-Rawls Corp. in 1981, Vice President of the Board of Directors of Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, for 21 years, and Chairman of the Board for the past six years. Delegate of the Council for the Trustee Relations for the Virginia Hospital Assoc., served as Mayor of Boykins for 19 years, served with the Army Air Force during WWII, President of Boykins Professional Development Corp. for 25 years, Treasurer of the Tri- County Planned Parenthood, charter member of the Board of Tidewater Virginia Development Council, and member for 20 years and Chairman for five years, Vice President of the Franklin Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce and a Director of the State Chamber, member of the Boykins United Methodist Church and past District Lay Leader for the Portsmouth District United Methodist Church, member and Past Master of Boykins Masonic Lodge, and a member and Past Master of Newsoms Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner since age 24. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Simmons Pope of Boykins; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Flannagan and Mrs. Theresa Friedman, both of Richmond; and two grandsons, David and Matthew Friedman. Services will be conducted in the Boykins United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, with Masonic Rites in the Capron Cemetery, Capron Va. McDowell Funeral Home will be in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Southampton Memorial Hospital or Boykins Methodist Church.
