POPE, PROMINENT DREWRYVILLE CITIZEN AND POSTMASTER DIES R.A. Pope of Drewryville, familiarly known to many friends throughout the county and section as "Bob" Pope, died Thursday morning, February 14, at his home in Drewryville after a protracted illness which had confirmed him to his home since last March. Mr. Pope was one of our county's best and most useful citizens, who numbered an unusually wide circle of friends and has spent an eminently worth-while life as an exemplary character in his home village and community; a man of sterling integrity in his dealings with his fellows, and true to every precept of Christian citizenship. Robert Amos Pope was born January 1, 1864, the son of the late Amos S. Pope and Mrs. Catherine Bryant Pope of Southampton County. For 35 years he had been a merchant in Drewryville and postmaster there since 1916. He was a consistent communicant of the M.E. Church, holding membership for many years with Old Peete's Church where he served acceptably as steward, secretary, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of its Sunday school. Later when that church was moved to Drewryville, he rendered the same high type of loyal service as steward, Sunday school superintendent and in other capacities. It may be said of him that one of the chief pleasures of his life was in Masonry. A Past Master of Courtland Lodge No. 85, A.F.& A.M., he was also District Deputy Grand Master for several terms, seldom if ever missing any Masonic communication or special occasion in his county, district or State. Traveling both the York and Scottish Rite ways, he became a Shriner and was an active member of Acca Temple in Richmond. He was a familiar figure at all Masonic convocations and was said to be better versed in the work of the order than any citizen of this issue is shown in the uniform of a Knight Templar. On December 27, 1888, he married Miss Delia Rebecca Thomas of Drewryville who survives him with three sons and three daughters; Amos P. Pope and W. Beekman Pope of Drewryville, Dr. Thomas B. Pope and Miss Ella Pope of Richmond, Mrs. Eff Muse McCall of Blytheville, Arkansas, and Miss Virginia Louise Pope of Courtland; by three grandchildren; a brother, W.R. Pope of Philadelphia, and a half-brother, Dr. B.A. Pope of Newsoms. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Drewryville M.E. Church conducted by his Pastor, Rev. R.H. Marks, assisted by Rev. J. Sidney Cobb of Windsor, Va., and burial will be made in the Drewryville Cemetery with Masonic rites at the grave in charge of Courtland Lodge No. 85. Active pallbearers will be: H.T. Grizzard, Jesse Lee, S.P. Johnson, J.G. Claud, Peter Thomas, F.E. Pope and Dr. J.A. Grizzard of Drewryville, and John Leigh of Portsmouth.
