ORIE HENRY POATES

Orie H. Poates, 75, died Saturday morning in the Extended Care Unit, John 
Randolph Hospital, Hopewell, after a long illness.  A native of Caroline 
County, he had been a resident of Courtland for the past 40 years.  A member 
of Courtland Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge and a director of Southampton 
County Bank.  He was retired merchant.  He was the son of the late Leroy and 
Betty Chinault Poates and the husband of Louise Fraughnaugh Poates.  Besides 
his wife, are two sons, Calvin D. Poates, Pearisburg, Va., and Francis W. 
Poates of Chester, Va.; one sister, Mrs. James Patterson of Fredericksburg, 
one grandchild, Daniel W. Poates.  A funeral service will be held Monday, 
11:00 A.M., the graveside, Riverside Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Harold 
Lewis.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Courtland Rescue 
Squad.

   COURTLAND - A graveside funeral service for Orie Henry Poates, 75, of Court 
St., Courtland, was held Monday at 11 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Courtland 
by the Rev. Harold Lewis.

   The pallbearers were Bob Hollandsworth, Fox Urquhart, E.R. Vaughan, Dick 
Clements, David Kitchen and Harwood Babb.

   Poates died Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the John Randolph Extended Care Unit 
in Hopewell after a long illness.

   A native of Caroline County, he was the son of Leroy F. and Mrs. Betty 
Chinault Poates and the husband of Mrs. Louise Fraughnaugh Poates.

   He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, Courtland Masonic Lodge and a 
former director of Southampton County Bank.

   Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Calvin D. Poates of 
Pearisburg, and Francis W. Poates of Chester; one sister, Mrs. James Patterson 
of Fredericksburg and a grandson, Daniel Wayne Poates.
