Pittman, 93, the last surviving Confederate soldier of the Bertie County, died at his home in Aulander today. He was born in Virginia in 1842 and served four years in the Confederate forces in the Civil War. He then moved to North Carolina where he has lived ever since. He married Mattie Cook, of Aulander. He is survived by his wife, and two sons, John R. Pittman, of Homersville, Ga. And Dr. M.A. Pittman of Wilson. Funeral services will be held from the home in Aulander at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery. ******************************************************************************* W.H. PITTMAN W.H. Pittman, 92 [sic; 93], the last surviving Confederate soldier of Bertie County, died at his home in Aulander, Monday, October 14. Mr. Pittman was born in Southampton County on May 10*, 1842, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mallory Pittman. He was twice married his first wife being Miss Temple [sic; Temperance*] Darden of Newsoms and his second wife Miss Mattie Cook of Aulander who survives him. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, John R. Pittman of Homersville, Ga., and Dr. Mallory A. Pittman of Wilson, N.C.; and by a number of nieces and nephews, two of his nephews being W.L. Beale and J.W. Beale of Franklin. Funeral services were held from the Aulander Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J.T. Draper assisted by Rev. Mr. Taylor. Interment was in the Aulander Cemetery. D, 3rd Va. Inf. He enlisted in Jerusalem [now Courtland], age 18, on March 05. 1861, and served 4 years. D.Cert. 56 (Aulander, Mitchell Twp. #7) gives sn/o M.A. & Jane (Scoggin) Pittman. War Dept. headstone app. gives b. 4 May 1842. Mallory S. PITTMAN & Jane SCOGGINS (SCOGGIN), dt/o Thos. SCOGGINS, entered a m.bond 1 May 1832. (Southampton Co. M.Reg. p. 431) Several Ancestry.com family trees give them as Mallory Seward Pittman (1807-1855) & Rebecca Jane Scoggins (b. 1815 Sussex Co.). Most records give Jane, but his bro John D.'s m.rec. does give Rebecca J. (Southampton Co. MB2:146) William's first marriage: William H. Pittman, 24, single, b. Southampton Co., res.
