All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN EURE PETERSON Johnnie Eure Peterson, 70, a lifelong resident of Franklin, died in Raiford Memorial Hospital on Monday morning, October 4, after a brief illness. Mr. Peterson was the son of Mrs. Annie Glover Peterson of Portsmouth and the late Charles A. Peterson, and the husband of Mrs. Maggie Worrell Peterson of Franklin. He attended the old Franklin Academy and was a member of Company I, Virginia National Guard, for some years after the Spanish-American War. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church. "Pete" as he was known to local baseball fans, for the past 20 years had been groundkeeper at the athletic field, always keeping the diamond in perfect shape for playing. Besides his mother and wife he is survived by three sons, William M. Peterson of Franklin, Wallace M. Peterson, USN, stationed at the Naval Air Base, Memphis, Tenn., and Robert E. Lee Peterson of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Gattie P. Guyton of Richmond and Mrs. Virginia P. Sullivan of South Norfolk; five grandchildren; on brother, Joseph Peterson of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Lettie Matthews of South Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland and Sons by [...*] Rev. R.D. Stephenson and Harvey L. Carnes, followed by interment in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearer were William Bradshaw, John R. Cornwell, Virgil Derby, W.F. Hart, Jr., Harry Hassett, Ryland Hasty, Richard Lawrence and Vernon Presson.
