Peters, 82 years of age, died at Raiford Memorial Hospital Friday, January 21, from a heart attack. He was a familiar and beloved figure in our town, kind and generous in his deeds and impulses, and a faithful public servant in the capacity of barber here for 55 years, which, it is believed, is a record from point of service unexcelled anywhere. At the same location for more than half a century he had become an honorable and useful person in the town’s life, and there was no accommodation of service which he would not gladly do for anyone. Richard Augustus Peters, of "Uncle Dick" as he was familiarly known to everyone, was born in the Berlin community, this county, the son of Joseph Henry Peters and Mrs. Ellen Spivey Peters. In 1889* he married Miss Laura Atkinson Emory of Surry County, who died about seven years ago. He is survived by five children; Richard A. Peters, Jr. of Arlington, Va., Patrick H. Peters of Richmond, Lieut. James Shelton Peters, U.S.N.R., stationed at the Great Lakes Training Station; Mrs. Lorena Peters Beale and Miss Blanche Peters of Franklin, two grandchildren, Mrs. E.A. Bradshaw, Jr., of Franklin and Miss Emory Ann Peters of Arlington, besides several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was a faithful member of the Franklin Baptist Church where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. Harry Wardell Backhus, 3rd, Dr. W.T. Scott and Rev. J.R. Stein. Favorite songs of his were sung and a poem he loved was read during the service. There were many lovely flowers and a large assemblage of friends. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active bearers being: Willie M. Weede, Jesse A. Weede, W.T. Pace, Jr., Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, S.W. Rawls, S.W. Lankford, J.P. King, Robert C. Councill, and Dr. Morgan B. Raiford. Honorary bearers were selected from a long list of personal friends.
