POWELL, BOYKINS CITIZEN, DIES AT 72 Fillmore Madison Powell, a leading citizen of Boykins, died Thursday afternoon about 12:45 at his residence there. Mr. Powell was 72. He was born May 19, 1867, his parents being the late Littleton G. and Betty Kirk Powell of the Branchville community. Prominent as a farmer and dairyman, Mr. Powell was a member of the Virginia Dairyman’s Association and of the Norfolk Cooperative Milk Producers Association. In 1933 he was selected as one of 16 "Master Farmers" for the State of Virginia. A member of the Boykins Baptist Church, he and been a deacon in the church and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Powell had represented Boykins District on the Southampton County School Board and on the county Board of Supervisors. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Niblett Powell and a son, Madison Graves Powell; two other sons, F.M. Powell, Jr. and L. Clyde Powell of Suffolk, children of his first wife, the late Mrs. Lucy Kindred DeLoatche Powell; two brothers, R.H. Powell and W. Lee Powell of Newport News, besides four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon from the residence. ****************************************************************************** HOLD POWELL FUNERAL TODAY. A Prominent Boykins Citizen To Be Buried In Town's Cemetery BOYKINS, Jan. 28. - (Special) - Funeral services for Filmore Madison Powell, widely known Boykins citizen, will be conducted at 2:00 o'clock today from the residence here. The Rev. F.B. Handley will conduct the rites and burial will be at Beechwood cemetery. Mr. Powell, who died shortly after noon Thursday, had been ill for some time. Long prominent in public affairs, Mr. Powell had served Southampton county as a member of the County Board of Supervisors and the County School Board. Active in the Boykins Baptist Church, he was a member of the Board of Deacons for years. Mr. Powell was a member of the Norfolk Co-operative Dairy and of the Virginia Dairymen's Association. Surviving Mr. Powell are his widow, Mrs. Anna N. Powell; three sons, Madison O. Powell, F.M. Powell, Jr., of Boykins, and L. Clyde Powell, of Suffolk; also four grandchildren; two brothers, R.H. Powell, of Boykins, and W. Lee Powell, of Newport News. ****************************************************************************** BOYKINS CITIZEN [photo] RITES FOR F.M. POWELL Funeral services for Fillmore Madison Powell, who died Thursday afternoon of last week, were conducted Sunday afternoon from his home near Boykins at 2:30 o’clock by the Rev. F.B. Handley of Boykins Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin Baptist Church, the Rev. E.B. Loving of Boykins Methodist Church and the Rev. C.P. Cleveland of Newsoms Baptist Church. "In the Garden," "Eventide" and "Abide with Me" were sung by a combined choir and quartette. Honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday school class of Boykins Baptist Church, and a number of neighbors and friends from the county and State. Active bearers were R.H. Powell, Jr., W. Hugh Powell, L.F. Powell, Moseley Powell, William Powell, James Knight, L.C. Drake, Jr., R.T. and Thomas Stephenson. The casket was covered with a pall of calla lilies and red roses. Burial took place in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. A prominent farmer and dairyman, Mr. Powell had also held many offices of honor and trust. Statewide recognition was given him in 1919, when he represented Virginia at a World Cotton Conference held at New Orleans, and again in 1923, when he was appointed by the late E. Lee Trinkle, then governor of Virginia, to represent the State at a National Conference for Boll Weevil Control, held at Atlanta.
