Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Powell. He was taken suddenly ill on Thursday of last week and was rushed to Sarah Leigh Hospital in Norfolk where he was operated on as quickly as possible for appendicitis. When the incision was made it was discovered that peritonitis had set in and that Mr. Powell had much against him but it was believed that he had a real fighting chance for his life. The operation was quite successful and he rallied well and fought bravely, but the ravages of disease were too much for him and he died early Tuesday morning. His body was brought to Boykins that evening and carried to the home of his brother, George Powell, for his mother’s health was such that it could not be carried to her home. Mr. Powell leaves a widow and four children; a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Powell; three brothers, George, Hugh and Franklin Powell, and two sisters, Mrs. H.G. Coleman and Mrs. W.F. McKinstry to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held at the [home] of George Powell, Rev. J.L. Carrick, pastor of the Baptist Church, conducted the service and was assisted by Rev. L.C. Northen of Richmond, who is aiding Pastor Carrick in a revival, and by Rev. L.R. Black, pastor of the Methodist Church, and Rev. Mr. Johnson, who is aiding him in a meeting at Clarksbury, after which the body was laid to rest in the local cemetery. If Mr. Powell’s popularity may be judged by the number of floral designs, he was indeed highly esteemed by all his friends. Few are those who die so early in life who are so loved as was Mr. Powell, for there was a profusion of beautiful flowers and a great crowd present even including those colored friends upon his farm. Those of Mr. Powell’s relatives and friends who attended the funeral from out-of-town were: Lewis Powell, Richmond; A.L. Powell, Newport News; A.H. Hines of Suffolk, father of Mrs. Grover Powell, and her two sisters, Mrs. G.M. Naff of Emporia, and Mrs. Bettie Erback of Suffolk, and her brothers, Angus Hines of Suffolk.
