Pillow died at his home in Clay Street Wednesday afternoon, April 20, at the age of 57. He had been a resident of Franklin since 1914, coming here from Hamlet, N.C., and engaging for several years in the moving picture business, later devoting his time to life insurance in which he was phenomenally successful. In September, 1925, his health failed and he had made one of the most remarkable fights for life in the knowledge of the writer, apparently regaining his health after several specialists had said he would never get up again. For several months, however, he was up all of the time and had resumed his life insurance work, but since February of this year had been confined to his bed until the end came Wednesday. With bravery, tenacity and a determination to live which excited the admiration of everyone, his many friends feel that in his efforts to regain health they have seen a battlefield indeed and that no one could have displayed more indomitable courage in any cause than died Mr. Pillow in his heroic struggle for life. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.A. Pillow of Petersburg, Va., and spent a number of years of his life in Richmond. His first wife was Miss Mildred Davis of Buckingham County, Va., the children of this union being: Mrs. Henry B. Long of Hamlet, Davis D. Pillow of Raleigh, G.E. and Kenneth M. Pillow of Franklin. On February 28, 1920, he married Miss Louise Lawrence of this town who survived him, together with two brothers, Chas. P. Pillow and N.A. Pillow of Roanoke, and three sisters, Mrs. James O’Brien, Mrs. Earl Jones and Mrs. Bertha Ellis, all of Richmond. He was a member of High Street M.E. Church here and of the Hamlet, N.C. Lodge No. 531, A. F. & A. M. The funeral services were conducted from the home yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. L.T. Williams, pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the members of the Franklin Masonic Lodge being in charge. The body bearers were: R.I. Beale, J.O. Haslett, W.H. Jones, W.O. Bogart, Sol. W. Rawls, Dr. W.H. Arthur, E.C. Smith and Chas. O. Lawrence of Norfolk. Honorary Pallbearers were: Dr. R.L. Raiford, R.E.L. Watkins, W.T. Pace, E.P. Jones, J.F. Bryant, Jr., Dr. E.A. de Bordenave, Jas. A. Johnson and J.B. Vaughan.
