Dr. Powell was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Edwards Powell of Franklin, who survives him, and a son of the late Godwin Moore and Cornelia Ann Holloman Powell of Hertford County. N.C., where he was born July 2, 1885. Moving to Norfolk in early manhood, he entered the employ of Jacob Bennett, jeweler. In August, 1906, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Horology and Optics. For several years, he was associated with an elder brother, Dr. John Mills Powell, in the firm of Powell Brothers, Jewelers and optometrists, later conducting the business alone. For the past three years he had been associated with Dr. Ernest B. Gatten, Jr., in the practice of optometry, with offices at 106 Third Avenue. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and its Bruner Bible class, the Shriners, and the Lions Club. From 1942 to 1950 he was a member of the Town Commission. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Dr. Jordan Beale Powell, Jr., of Ahoskie, N.C.; a granddaughter, Margaret Gatling Powell, also of Ahoskie; a sister, Mrs. J.A. Murphy of Boston, Mass; two brothers, Dr. C.G. Powell of Ahoskie and Dr. John Mills Powell of Galax; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Poplar Spring Cemetery at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with Revs. Randolph Gregory and Elmer N. Hassell officiating, following by Masonic rites. Active pallbearers were W.R. Atkinson, Robert E. Coggsdale, Dr. E. B. Gatten, Jr., J. Burnett Johnson, Dr. Darden W. Jones, Emerson Jones, G. Hinson Parker and W. Wilkinson. ****************************************************************************** DR. JORDAN BEALE POWELL It was characteristic of Dr. Jordan Beale Powell, whose death here last Friday occasioned universal sadness, to be completely loyal to the state of his adoption. This loyalty was conferred likewise upon the community in which he settled and in which he spent the greater part of his life; for he was convinced beyond any argument that nowhere else in the world was there a finer town than Franklin. Having driven his stake deeply into the local sod, he elected to stay on after his elder brother, Dr. John Mills Powell, moved to the western part of the state. Here he was and here he proposed to remain. A man of gregarious instincts and a ready wit, he made friends with enviable case. He liked people; and because he liked people he was ever willing to perform the little favors and courtesies that are the mark of a true gentleman. Another trait for which he was noted was his unshakable faith in the future of the town. His belief that Franklin was destined to grow into a thriving city prompted his eight years ago to announce his candidacy for membership on the Town Commission, where his sane and constructive advice commanded the respect of his fellows. His two terms as Commissioner came during the most exciting period in the town’s history, when the direction of municipal affairs called for all the wisdom and knowledge and patience that could be brought to bear upon them. We believe that, had he been questioned on the matter, he would have declared those years on the Town Commission as the most satisfying of his entire career.
