POWELL FRANKLIN - John Elstin Powell, 74, died Sunday in a hospital. A native of Isle of Wight County, he was a son of James W. and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Carr Powell and the husband of Mrs. Lucy Nelms Powell. He was a retired night watchman of St. Regis Paper Co., Franklin. He was a member of High Street Methodist Church. He was a World War I veteran. Besides his widow, surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Woodrow Cobb of Sedley, Mrs. Edward Story of Suffolk, Mrs. Alex Vargo and Mrs. Hazel Vick of Franklin; a brother, Joseph Powell of Zuni; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert D. Fridley. Frampton, Russell Gayle, Larry Story, James Surace, Dr. H.L. Gardner, George Heegepeth, C.H. Doughtrey, Roland Whitehead and R. Edward Story. Powell, 74, died Sunday in Southampton Memorial Hospital. A native of Isle of Wight County, he was a son of James W. and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Carr Powell and the husband of Mrs. Lucy Nelms Powell.
