CRASH OF LIGHT AIRPLANE IS FATAL TO DR. JORDAN POWELL, FRANKLIN NATIVE A light plane was fatal to a former Franklin resident, Dr. Jordan B. Powell, Jr., of Ahoskie, N.C. The plane crashed in a field near Como, N.C., Sunday evening about 7 o’clock, instantly killing the 44 year old dentist, when it struck a small tree while making a landing on the Bobbitt farm, two miles south of Como. A native of Franklin, Dr. Powell was the son of Mrs. J.B. Powell Sr., and the late J.B. Powell, Sr., of Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Lillie Gatling Powell, and one daughter, Miss Margaret Powell, both of Ahoskie. He served as a lieutenant in Navy during World War II. Dr. Powell had been practicing in Ahoskie for the past 20 years and was associated with his uncle, Dr. C.G. Powell. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Ahoskie Baptist Church and were conducted by Rev. W.P. Milne, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Oscar Creech of Chowan College, Murfreesboro. Pallbearers were Dr. J.D. Brown, Dr. Ed Ferro, Dr. J.G. Matheson, Dr. J.D. Ruffin and Dr. Dan Boyette, all of Ahoskie; Dr. W.F. Brett of Murfreesboro, N.C.; and G. Hinson Parker, Jr., and Marion Whitfield, both of Franklin. Burial was in the Poplar Spring Cemetery at Franklin under the direction of the Holland Funeral Home of Murfreesboro.
