All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY AUGUSTA MAXEY POWELL Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Maxey Powell, wife of Ferrell Franklin Powell, who died Sunday morning at Raiford Hospital, were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The beautiful services of the Methodist Church was read by her pastor, the Rev. Harry Wardell Backhus, III, assisted by Dr. William Archer Wright and the Rev. B.B. Bland. Several lovely prayer and the reading of Tennyson’s "Crossing the Bar," enhanced the beauty of the service, which was conducted in the presence of a host of friends and loved ones from near and far. Many floral designs were banked by the grave near the family as a tribute to a lovely Christian life. Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the beloved Methodist minister, the Rev. J. Spears Maxey and Estelle Mundie Maxey of Franklin. She was born in Essex County, Virginia, September 25, 1911. She was received into Trinity Methodist Church at Orange on July 4, 1920, by her father, who was serving as pastor of the church at that time. She received her early education in the public schools at Cartersville, Orange, Unionville and Keysville. She received her college training at Blackstone College and Emory and Henry College and took an outstanding part in the student life at both schools. She was married to Ferrell F. Powell of Sunbury, N.C., on May 5, 1934, at Whaleyville by her father, who was pastor of the church at that time. Following her marriage she moved to Franklin, where she made her home until the time of her death. After coming to Franklin she united with High Street Methodist Church and had an important part in the work of the church until her death. She was a member of the choir, the Women’s Society of Christian Service, was Secretary of Literature and Publications of the Society, and was active in the church school and all activities of the church in general. She was widely known in Franklin for her lovely character and her usefulness in civic affairs. She took part in Red Cross work, Block workers for defense, Air Tower observer, Solicitor for the Community Fund and other civic projects. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, friends, church and community. She is survived by her husband, Ferrell F. Powell, a small son, Ferrell F. Powell, Jr., and her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. J.S. Maxey, all of Franklin. Pallbearers were S.C. Bell, Jack G. Holland, J. Edgar Weede, K.M. Pillow, Story Cutchin and H.S. Rawlings.
