All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SAMUEL JAMES POWELL Samuel James ("Candy") Powell, 72, a farmer residing near Suffolk and a former resident of Southampton County, died Sunday afternoon, March 14, at his home after a short illness. A son of the late Hartwell and Eliza Chandler Powell and a native of Isle of Wight County, he was a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church, in which he served for many years. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Mary Burgess Powell of Suffolk; five sons, Raleigh H. Powell of Washington, D.C., Early Powell of Suffolk, Hudson and Paul Powell of Norfolk, and Fletcher R. Powell of Eagle Rock, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Raby Story and Mrs. Charles Bulls of Franklin, Mrs. Paul Branch of Ivor, and Mrs. Wallace Branch of Newport News; a sister, Miss Maggie Powell of Franklin; nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in the cemetery at Black Creek on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. W.B. Watson.
