Mr. Powell was the son of Littleton G. Powell of this county and Elizabeth Kirk Powell, and was educated in the rural schools and at Buckhorn Academy, conducted by Captain Julian Henri Picot near Como, N.C. He was married at the age of 24 to Miss Martha Frances Powell, who died four years ago, and was one of the organizers of the Branchville Baptist Church, spending over half of his life in that community as a successful farmer and stock raiser. Moving to Boykins about 30 years ago he engaged in the mercantile business and in meat-packing until his retirement 15 years ago. Besides his unusual business ability Mr. Powell was known to his friends as the possessor of an exceptionally keen sense of humor. In the Baptist Church of Boykins, of which he was the oldest deacon in point of service, Mr. Powell played a prominent part, and took an active part in civic affairs as well as church work. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W.F. McKinstry and Mrs. H.G. Coleman; three sons, Geo. A. Powell, L.F. Powell and W. Hugh Powell, all of Boykins; two sisters, Mrs. J.B. Powell of Branchville and Miss Anna Powell of Staunton; four brothers, R.H., Geo. E., and F.M. Powell of Boykins and W. Lee Powell of Newport News, besides a large number of relatives. Funeral services were held from the home of his son, W. Hugh Powell, Rev. F.B. Handley, pastor of the deceased officiating, assisted by Rev. J.L. Kibler of Boykins, Rev. Graham S. Carlton of Stony Creek and Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin. A quartette composed of Mrs. H.M. Purviance, Mrs. E.W. Bryant, Miss Emily Hines and L.L. Story sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Jesus I Come" at the home, and the choirs of the Boykins Baptist and Methodist churches sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" at the grave in Beechwood Cemetery. Tennyson’s "Crossing the Bar" was read by Rev. Mr. Handley at the home and "Fold up the Tent" by Rev. Mr. Carlton at the grave. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Active pallbearers were: W. Hugh, L.F. and Geo. A. Powell, sons of the deceased, W.F. McKinstry and H.G. Coleman, sons-in-law, and Merrill Clyde and R.H. Powell, Jr., nephews. Out-of-town relatives and visitors attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Rawlings and Mrs. Wesley Beale of Franklin; Mrs. J.M. Knight and Mrs. Vernie Pablo of Norfolk; Mrs. A.L. Powell, Miss Hilda Powell and W. Lee Powell of Newport News, Rev. and Mrs. Rupert Coleman, J.H. Coleman, Mrs. Odie Coleman, J.F. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. C.A.
