All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM ALEXANDER PHILLIPS FRANKLIN - A funeral service for William Alexander Phillips, 68, was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in High Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeremy Galloway. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, with Masonic rites accorded by Franklin Masonic Lodge 151. Wright Funeral Home as in charge. Pallbearers were: W.H. Goodwin, George Henson Parker, William R. Butler Jr., Glen Mabe, John Abernathy, Wesley Wills, Edward L. Felton, Bill Booth and William T. Atkinson, Jr. Phillips died Friday in Southampton Memorial Hospital. A native of Athens, Ga., and former resident of Tappahannock, he was the husband of Ruth Olliff Phillips. He was a retired area conservationist of the Federal Soil Conservation Service of the Department of Agriculture. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and was a Sunday School teacher; Arlington Masonic Lodge 102; Millers Tavern; and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia’s School of Foresty and was an Army Major during World War II. Other survivors include a daughter, Allene P. Atkinson, and two sons, Stephen K. Phillips and William A. Phillips Jr., of Franklin; two sisters, Eva P. Campbell of Kingsport, Tenn., and Blanche P. Eberhart of Athens; a brother, Keely N. Phillips of Ocilla, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
