All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHARLES ELLSWORTH POND Charles Ellsworth Pond, well-known Franklin citizen, died suddenly Sunday afternoon as the result of an attack of angina pectoris while he was walking in the woods near town with members of his Sunday school class, a number of boys of Scout age whom he taught in the Baptist Sunday school and frequently accompanied on hikes. The boys, making an improvised stretcher of their sweaters, carried Mr. Pond to the home of Jacob Bracey near-by where Edward and Roy Bracey brought him to Franklin in their car, Mr. Pond dying just as they reached his home in First Avenue. Charles Pond, as he was familiarly known to his many friends, was born in the Capron community, this county, but moved to Norfolk when a small boy where he was a tinner and plumber, and came to Franklin 21 years ago to conduct the plumbing department of W.T. Pace. He was a consistent member of the Franklin Baptist Church and of Franklin Lodge No. 151, A.F. & A.M. He was one of the most enthusiastic Masons in this part of the State, always attending Grand Lodge sessions and was Deputy Grand Master of this Masonic district, No. 32. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Josie Barrett Pond; a daughter, Miss Bertie Pond; three sons, Charles Pond, Jr. of the United States Navy, Norfolk, Robert and Billy Pond Franklin; a sister, Mrs. A.C. Swain, of Washington; a brother, W.L. Pond of Portland, Oregon; his step-mother, Mrs. Mollie Pond; a half-sister, Mrs. William H. Starkey, and a half-brother, John Pond, all of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted from the residence here Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. Roscoe Jones and Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt. Active pallbearers were: E.G. Evans, J.J. Pace, Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, Geo. H. Parker, Jonah Soble, J.F. Sandlin, Dr. J.P. Broaddus and J. Riddick Screws. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Masonic rites being conducted at the grave by members of the local lodge and a large number of visiting Masons from various lodges in the county and section. Members of the local Boy Scout troop in uniform acted as an honorary escort. Charles Ellsworth POND, Sr., of Franklin, plumbing hardware salesman, b.
