"Jack" Parker, as he was familiarly known to hundreds of his friends, was born in Isle of Wight County near Franklin, the son of the late John and Mrs. Jane Newby Parker, and had been a citizen of our town for approximately 35 years. The greater part of this time was spent in service with the local post office. Mr. Parker entered the Franklin post office in 1905 under the late Dr. E.A. de Bordenave, postmaster, remaining there until July 10, 1932, when he was retired at the 65-year age limit then prevailing. He served through the administrations of six Presidents and four postmasters, Dr. de Bordenave being postmaster when Mr. Parker was retired. He was thoroughly familiar with the service, being unusually efficient in all phases of post office work, and was a general favorite with the public because of his unfailing spirit of courtesy and accommodation to all patrons. Upon his retirement four years ago, he was presented with a handsome gold watch, the gift of Postmaster de Bordenave and all employees of the local office in recognition of the esteem in which he was held by his co-workers. Forty-three years ago Mr. Parker married Miss Mary Frances Bunn of Dinwiddie County, Va., who survives him with four daughters, Mrs. E.M. Story of Norfolk, Mrs. K.G. Browne of Portsmouth, Misses Janie and Jessie Parker of Franklin; one brother, R.H. Parker of Potecasi, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. W.P. Benthall of Rich Square, N.C.; two grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Mr. Parker was a consistent member of the Franklin Baptist Church and of the Bruner Bible Class of its Sunday school, and was affiliated with the fraternal organizations of Pythians and Woodmen of the World. Funeral services were conducted from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, burial following in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Exum N. White, R.L. Scott, F.F. Jenkins, Owen Forbes, John H. Scott, Dr. J.B. Powell, Harry Steinhardt and George Watkins. The honorary bearers included: J.R.
