All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY VIRGINIA PARKER Miss Mary Virginia Parker, died in a Franklin nursing home March 9, 1984 after a prolonged illness. She was 94. Miss Parker was the oldest child of John Crafford Parker and Emily Virginia Norfleet Parker. She was born in Franklin and was a lifelong resident of that city. She was educated at Franklin Female Seminary and at Sweet Briar College, where she was in the second class graduated from that institution. After college, she gave piano lessons in Franklin, Boykins and Carrsville. She was an ardent horsewoman and travelled at times on horseback from her home in Franklin to her music classes in Carrsville. She and her father, who was a prominent attorney in Franklin, were the founders during World War I of the first Red Cross Chapter in Southampton County. She conducted work sessions for Red Cross Chapter in Southampton County. She conducted work sessions for Red Cross volunteers in 1917 and 1918 and at the war’s end was in training in Richmond for nursing duty in the Armed Services. Miss Parker was secretary for banking and other business organizations in Richmond for several years. Upon her retrun here from Richmond she established and operated an independent insurance agency in her own name until, when she completely retired, she sold the business to another Franklin agency. She was a former member of the Franklin Book Club, United Daughters of Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary, Southampton Historical Society and the Franklin Music Study Club. She belonged to the Franklin Baptist Church throughout her life and had served on its Sunday school staff and its Women’s Missionary Society. Miss Parker is survived by a brother, John C. Parker, a Franklin attorney; and by five nieces, Mrs. R.E. Rutledge Jr. of N.Y., Mrs. James C. McCall of Columbia, S.C., and Mrs. John Moncure of Richmond, Mrs. Edward T. Lemmon of Suffolk and Mrs. Robert E. Hale of Henderson, N.C.; another brother, Alexander Wilson Parker, died in Richmond in 1972. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, by the Dr. Michael Clingenpeel, Pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Miss Parker’s niece, the Rev. Fleming Rutledge, assistant to the Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in New York City. The family request no flowers and suggest memorial donations to a charity. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
