Died, of Apoplexy, on Wednesday, the 26 h ult., at his residence in Southampton county, Va., Col. WM. C. PARKER, in the 55th year of his age. Col. P. was a lawyer of distinction, an un- swerving democrat, an honor to his State, and universally admired for his social qualities. He was returning from the village, a few miles dis- tant from his home, on Sunday evening previous to his death, in ferfect health an fine spirits, when he was attached [sic] by a fit of apoplexy and remained speechless until his death on Wednes- day evening. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn their irreparable loss. May He who tempereth the winds to the shorn lamb enable them to bear this heavy affliction with becoming fortitude ! At a Court held for the county of Southampton, on the 20th day of September, 1847: Ordered, That the following proceedings of the Jus- tices of the County, the Bar and Officers of the Court, be entered upon the records of this Court--to wit: The Sudden and melancholy death of Col. WM. C. PARKER, late Prosecuting Attorney in this Court, having been announced to the Court by Robert Ridley, Esq., on motion, Resolved, That the Court, entertaining a deep sense of the great merits of Col. Parker as Prosecuting Attor- ney, as a citizen and a man, displayed in all the rela- tions of life, and through a long course of official servi- ces, profoundly regretting his loss and wishing to ma- nifest their respect for his memory in an enduring form, order that these preceedings to be entered upon the minutes of the Court. Resolved, That we will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved, That a copy of these preceedings be com- municated to the family of the deceased and be pub- lished in the Richmond Enquirer, the Petersburg Intel- ligencer and Petersburg Republican. Court Order Book 1843-1849 [p. 547] At a Court of Monthly Sessions held for the County of Southampton at the Courthouse on the 20th. day of September 1847 . [p. 551] On the motion of John M. Gurley, who made oath and together with Harrison D. Moore and Joseph H. Barham his Securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of five hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of William C. Parker decd. in due form. _____ ŻŻŻŻŻ Ordered that James D. Massenburg, John Moore Jr. Richard Barrett and Warren Edwards or any three of them, being first Sworn before a Justice of the Peace for that purpose do appraise all the personal estate of William C. (SPARK) PARKER. Col. PARKER bought the 381-acre "Belvidere" tract from Deborah Ann W. RICKS (legacy from her father Arnold W. RICKS) 29 Apr 1835, then sold it, with Eliza's consent, 10 Aug 1835, to Benjamin DEVANEY. Eliza was among the legatees of her brother William A. SPARK, who left will 29 Apr 1847 in New Orleans (proved 17 Jul 1848, Southampton Co.). (Southampton Co. DB23:481-83, 495-96; WB14:116-17). Eliza, age 50, appears in the 1850 Census with [daughter} Juliet R., 16, adjacent to the family of James W. PARKER - possibly William's brother.
