[...] DEATH OF C. F. PRETLOW, SR. Mr. C. F. Pretlow, Sr., residing in Armstrong street, Park View, died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at the age of 57 years*. Mr. Pretlow was of a well known Virginia family, and was especially well known in Southampton county, where he had formerly resided. He was the father of Mrs. Thomas U. Redley [sic; Ridley] and Mr. C. F. Pretlow, Jr., of this city, and of Mr. Robert Pretlow and Miss P. H. Pretlow, of Southampton. He also leaves a widow. The funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at Ivor, in Southampton county. ****************************************************************************** DIED. Jun 1845, invalid; m. 29 years. (Portsmouth City, Norfolk Co., e.d. 122, sheet 12A #28) The 1870 Census gives age 26 (b. ca. 1844, farmer; enum. w/ bro Wm.H., a lawyer, age 38. William was the first Captain of the Southampton Lee Artillery - A/18th VA Heavy Art'y, CSA, and later served in the General Assembly. Charles Sr. m. Priscilla J. HOLMES, 28 Sep 1871. Sons Charles Jr. & Robert are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth.
