PRETLOW DIES IN NORFOLK LAST NIGHT J.A. Pretlow of this town died in the Norfolk Protestant Hospital last night about 9 o’clock where he had been a patient for a few weeks. He was 59 years of age and had been in ill-health for many months. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this morning. John Alexander Pretlow was the son of late John Pretlow, Sr., and Mrs. Evelyn* Bolling Pretlow, and was born at "Riverview," the old Pretlow plantation on the Blackwater River just south of Franklin. He was educated at the Virginia Episcopal High School in Alexandria, and at a private academy in Norfolk. The greater part of his life was given to the active direction of the affairs of the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company which for many years had a large and successful business in the operation of a fleet of river steamer on the inland waters of Eastern North Carolina. Mr. Pretlow was President and General Manager of the Albemarle Company until a few years ago when the evolution of transportation from waterways to highway and truck saw the disappearance of the steamers from our rivers. He was also connected in an official capacity with two short line railways in Eastern North Carolina and had other extensive business interests. He was a communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church here and served for a number of years as one of its vestrymen. Mr. Pretlow is survived by one brother, R.A. Pretlow of Franklin; by two half-sisters, Mrs. A.A. Williams of Warrenton, N.C., and Mrs. G.G. McCann of Franklin; by a half-brother, Barclay Pretlow, and his step-mother, Mrs. John Pretlow, of this town, besides a large and prominent family connection. ****************************************************************************** Funeral services for J.A. Pretlow, whose death occurred last Thursday night, were held here Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Emmanuel Episcopal Church where Mr. Pretlow had been a life-long member and for many years a member of the church vestry. The service was read by Dr. Wm. A. Brown, rector of St. John’s Church, Portsmouth and by Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt, the rector of Emmanuel. The pallbearers were: Dr. P.P. Causey of Sedley, L. Fleetwood, Dr. W.H. Arthur, J. Edgar Weede, Harry Steinhardt, W.M. Bradshaw, Roger I. Beale and Dr. E.A. de Bordenave. Interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. An unusually large assemblage of friends was in attendance including many prominent people throughout this section of Virginia and from Northeastern North Carolina.
