PRETLOW DIES ON WEDNESDAY FROM HEART ATTACK Robert Ashton Pretlow died at his home in South High Street Wednesday afternoon about 4 o’clock of a sudden heart attack following a prolonged period of ill health. Mr. Pretlow was one of the most prominent business men in Virginia and had long been a leader in this section of the State. Among his varied business activities, he was founder and president of the Pretlow Peanut Co., president of the former Albemarle Steam Navigation Co., for a number of years actively interested in the business of Pretlow and Company, and one of the founders of the Merchant and Farmer Bank. He was also one of the founders and a vice president of the National Bank of Suffolk for several years. Mr. Pretlow was Senior Warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for many years and until the condition of his health prevented his active participation in the affairs of his church. A charter member of the Franklin Rotary Club, he was one of the leading spirits in establishing the crippled childrens Clinic still sponsored by the club, and had served for some years on the Council of the Town of Franklin. Mr. Pretlow was born May 4, 1869 at the old Pretlow home "Riverview" in Southampton County, the son of the late John and Mrs. Eva Bolling Pretlow. He was a graduate of Hanover Academy in Hanover County, Va., and had spent his entire life in Franklin. In 1896, he married Miss Janey Dickson Bogart of Franklin, who died May 30, 1930. Their children are: Bogart A. Pretlow of Franklin, Mrs. R.E. Rutledge of Coral Gables, Fla., and R.A. Pretlow, Jr. of Franklin. There are two grandchildren, R.E. Rutledge, Jr., of Coral Gables, Fla., and William Woods Pretlow of Franklin. He leaves two half-sisters, Mrs. A.A. Williams of Warrenton, N.C., and Mrs. George G. McCann, of Franklin, besides a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral rites will take place this (Friday) afternoon at 4 o’clock from his late residence, the Rev. Jean Andrew Vache of Emmanuel Church reading the service. Burial will be held in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery and the pallbearers will be: Edward Gilliam, W.M. Weede, Herbert Edwards, Geo. G. McCann, Jr., Alfred Williams of Warrenton, N.C., Jno. C. Parker, Jr., Howard Birdsong of Suffolk and General E.E. Goodwyn of Emporia.
