Pretlow of Newport News, son of the late Dr. T.J. Pretlow and Mrs. Nannie E. Pretlow of Franklin, died in Newport News Thursday, June 1, from a stroke of paralysis, which he survived only a few hours. Dr. Pretlow was 33 years old, was city health officer of Newport News, which position he had administered with unusual ability and successful results, and was one of the best known sanitarians in the State. He was a consistent member of the Chestnut Avenue M.E. Church of Newport News, the funeral being held from that church and the body brought to Franklin Friday morning for interment in the family cemetery at the J. Denson Pretlow place in the county. The burial services at the grave were conducted by Rev. R.M. Chandler. The pallbearers were Dr. E.A. de Bordenave, R.I. Beale, J.R. Knight, M.H. Moore, L.R. Jones, Col. L.R. Edwards, J.D. Abbitt, C.W. Darden, Dr. R.H. Cobb, T.O. Barrett; Dr. W.T. McLemore and L.L. Manry of Courtland and T.H. Birdsong of Suffolk. Dr. Pretlow is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Jas. L. McLemore, Misses Jennie Ware and Annie M. Pretlow of Suffolk and Mrs. Henderson Hedrick of Norfolk and by one brother, Wm. Pretlow of New York City. He was a member of the prominent family of the name in this county and was widely connected throughout the State. He was an exceptionally brilliant and exemplary young man and his death is deeply deplored by a wide circle of friends, many of whom accompanied his body here in manifestation of the esteem in which he was held.
