All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM MASSENBURG PRETLOW William Massenburg Pretlow of New York City died in a New York hospital Sunday in his 48th year, following an appendicitis operation. Mr. Pretlow was a native of this county, the son of the late Dr. Thos. J. Pretlow, both* of prominent Southampton families. A number of years ago he left Franklin, locating in New York where he was the head of Pretlow and Company, dealing in the importation and wholesale handling of peanuts. He married Miss Evelyn May, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John F. May of Waverly, Va., who survives him with two daughters, Evelyn May and Betty Warren Pretlow; by three sisters, Mrs. Jas. L. McLemore and Miss Annie M. Pretlow of Suffolk, and Mrs. Henderson T. Hedrick of Norfolk, besides a large family connection and many friends. The body was brought to Suffolk Tuesday morning, funeral services being conducted from the residence of Judge McLemore Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Dr. George Wesley Jones of Main Street M.E. Church. Burial was made at "Beechwood" the old Denson Pretlow plantation near Sedley in the family cemetery where many generations of his forebears are buried. The pallbearers were: Congressman Colgate W. Darden, Bogart Pretlow of New York, Clyde and Eugene Parker and Dr. Robert Matthews of Norfolk, Harvard Birdsong and Walter F. Story of Suffolk, Roger I. Beale and J. Edward Moyler of Franklin and Thos. H. Birdsong of Courtland. A large assemblage of friends from Suffolk, Franklin and this county was in attendance.
