All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BERKLEY ASHBY PORTER "Berk" Porter, age 63, passed away at his home in the Handsom community at midnight Monday, after a long and painful illness. He was the son of the late W.D. and Sallie Cornel Porter. He is survived by his wife, Lena Gilliam Porter. He is survived by his wife, Lena Gilliam Porter, his first wife being Etta Bishop Porter. Of this union one son survives, Simpson E. Porter, and one grandchild, Shirley Mae Porter; three brothers, A.P., H.W. and Gene Porter, all of the community; a half sister, Mrs. John Saunders, and a half brother, Garrett Porter, both of Portsmouth. Mr. Porter was born and spent all his life near Handsom. He had been a member of Mt. Horeb M.E. church since early life and was active in the organizations of the church, serving on the Board of Stewards for many years. Funeral services were held at Mt. Horeb Church Wednesday at 3:30, conducted by the Rev. F.L. Baker. The choir sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" "Does Jesus Care" and "God Will Take Care of You." Pallbearers were V.L. Drake, W.R Bishop, W.J. Bishop, Benjamin Porter, W.M. Porter, Jack Bunn, D.T. Drake, J.L. Porter, Jr. and Ray Porter. Honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday school class. "Christian's Good Night" sung at the grave. Interment was in the family cemetery near Handsom.
