All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BERTHA DRAKE PORTER Mrs. John Fletcher Porter, 68, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died at her home in Newsoms on Saturday, February 14, after several years of failing health. Mrs. Porter was the widow of John Fletcher Porter and daughter of the late William H. and Fannie Bunn Drake of the Newsoms community. She was a member of the Newsoms Methodist Church and of its Woman's Society of Christian Service. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Meredith W. Hayes and Mrs. Virginia P. Wyatt, both of Norfolk, and Mrs. Ernest Cogsdale of Newsoms; two grandsons; one brother, Willard Drake of Hampton; and a sister, Miss Rosa Drake of Newsoms. Final rites for Mrs. Porter were conducted on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the grave in Newsoms Cemetery. Officiating were Revs. O.L. Gochenour and R.L. Chadwick. The pallbearers were David T. Drake, Dr. J.J. Grizzard, D.B. Rountree, D.V. Story, L.L. Story, and J.Q. Worrell. Bertha (DRAKE; Mrs. John F.)
