LUTHER JACOB PORTER

   PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Luther Jacob Porter, 78, were held 
Thursday in Cottage Place United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harry L. Kidd, 
Jr.  Burial was in Olive Branch Cemetery with Foster Funeral Home in charge.

   Pallbearers were: Robert Collins, Harvey Eure, Bob Basham, Frank Faulker, 
Fred Rabel, Dickie Lassiter and Everett Lassiter.

   Porter who retired in 1969 as a carman of Seaboard Coast Line Railway after 
49 years, died Tuesday night in a hospital.

   He was a native of Newsoms and the husband of the late Virginia O. Porter.

   He was a member and a trustee of Cottage Place United Methodist Church, a 
choir member for more than 40 years, and a member of Bristow Bible Class and 
the Loyal Star.

   Survivors include a daughter Margaret L. Pope of Portsmouth; three 
brothers, Sam B. Porter of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jack N. Porter of Charlotte, 
N.C., and Roger T. Porter of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and 10 great-
grandchildren.

His mother, Mary Johnnie (NEWSOM) PORTER (1881 - 1955) 2m. widower Charles A. 
   OUTTEN (1871 - 1948), 8 Aug 1925, in Portsmouth.   They are also buried in 
   Olive Branch Cemetery.  The database entry [1882 - 1923] for Charles A. 
   actually refers to his first wife, Mary A. (MEARS) OUTTEN:

His father, Jacob L. PORTER (1879 - 1915) is buried in Hollywood Cemetery,
