The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W.R. Evans, at the Newsoms M.E. Church. Very young in life she united herself with the church and lived a consecrated Christian life. She was twice married; Her first husband, Mr. (Charles F.) Crowder, dying several years ago. She afterwards married Mrs. Willie J. Porter. Mrs. Porter was very regular in her attendance to church and her empty pew will cast a cloud of gloom upon her relatives and friends. Kind hands and loving hearts did what they could to comfort her until her gentle spirit took its flight to rejoin loved ones gone before. She is survived by her husband, Mr. W.J. Porter, an aged father, Mr. F.T. Simmons, nine children, Mrs. J.H. Pope, Boykin, Mr. C.T. Crowder, Franklin, Mr. H.A. Crowder, Miss Marian Crowder, Amos, Willie, Bennie, Harvey, and Corinne Porter of Newsoms; four sisters, Mrs. G.W. Ellis, Newsoms, Mrs. C.B. Felts, and Mrs. B.C. Butler, Rosemary, N.C. and Mrs. Logan Bland, Berkley, Va.; and one brother, Mr. S.J. Simmons, of Norfolk. In the family cemetery beneath a profusion of flowers the body was laid to rest to sleep that dreamless sleep "from which none ever wakes" Mattie (SIMMONS CROWDER; Mrs. Willie J.)
