COOK PORTER A funeral service for Mrs. Mattie Cook Porter, 89, of Courtland, was held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Harry W. Bunch and Dr. R.E. Brittle. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery. Pallbearers were William Britt, James O’Berry, Dewitt Wright, Irving Porter, J.L. Porter, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Forrester and George Cook. A native of Southampton County, she lived here most of her life. She was the widow of Willie Herman Porter and a daughter of William and Mrs. Roxanna Gray Cook. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society of Christian Service. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Anna P. Hedgepeth and Mrs. Lydia Griggs of Courtland, Mrs. Bessie P. Seldomridge of Franklin, and Mrs. Arie P. Wilkerson of Suffolk, three sons, W. Marvin Porter and Cecil Porter of Franklin, and Ray Porter of Handsom; three sisters, Mrs. A.R. Baggett of Suffolk, Mrs. J.Q. Worrell and Mrs. Ray Holloman of Newsoms; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Martha "Mattie" Lou (COOK; Mrs. "Willie" H.)
