Porter, 73, was held Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. in the Newsoms Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, was in charge. At time of his death, he was the chairman of the Southampton A.S.C.S. county committee, where he served three terms. He was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Franklin, where he had served ten years and was a member of the Governor’s Peanut Commission; and a member of the Valley Pines country club, where he had served on the board of directors four years. He was a charter member of the Newsoms Ruritan Club, where he had served as president and secretary-treasurer. He was a member of the Franklin- Southampton Chamber of Commerce for five years. During World War II he worked for the Southampton Co. extension service, supervising German prisoners of war. He had also served three years as chairman of the board of directors of the Virginia Peanut and Hog Growers Association. He had served on the Southampton County board of supervisors for twelve years and on the planning commission for ten years, where he had served as its chairman. For eighteen years he was A.S.C.S. community committeeman. Others survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Betsy Porter Brantley of Franklin, a son, John Ralph Porter of Newsoms; one granddaughter and one grandson; and a nephew, R. Samuel Drake of Newsoms.
