All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIE JAMES PORTER Willie James Porter, 85, a well-known resident and farmer of the Newsoms community, died early Sunday morning, November 14, at the home of his son, Lonnie L. Porter, near Newsoms, after a brief illness. The deceased was the son of the late Henry T.* and Ann S. Porter of Southampton County, and husband of the late Mattie Simmons Porter. He was a member of the Newsoms Methodist Church. A good neighbor to everyone, he was loved by all who knew him. Surviving him are six sons, G.W. Porter, L.L. Porter, Amos Porter, B.F. Porter and Harvey J. Porter, all of Newsoms, and W.J. Porter, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Mattie Pettiway of Emporia; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. A.W. Tucker of Newsoms; and one brother, T.H. Porter of Boykins. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Newsoms Cemetery on Monday afternoon at three o’clock by Rev. R.H. Shapland, pastor of the Newsoms Methodist Church. Active pallbearers were Ralph, Luther, Clyde, Raymond and Walter Porter and Hayes Crowder, all of Newsoms.
