Prince died at his country home near Newsoms last Friday morning, March 25, at 7 o’clock, following a ten-days illness from pneumonia, developing from an attack of influenza. Mr. Prince was 44 years old, the son of Mrs. Annie M. Prince and the late George W. Prince of this county, his father dying about four years ago. He was easily one of Southampton’s leading citizens, measured in terms of native worth, sterling honor and integrity, a progressive and prosperous farmer and a man of exceptionally fine Christian character. He had been a member of Whitehead’s M.E. Church in his native community since early boyhood, serving as a steward, Sunday school superintendent, teacher and in other channels of usefulness. He took a great interest in Masonry and was a member of the Newsoms Lodge A.F. & A.M., as well as of the Newsoms Pythian fraternity. He had served his district acceptably as school trustee for a number of years, and was an enthusiastic supporter of public schools and a leader for better school facilities. One of the last public affairs he attended was the recent Father and Son banquet of the Newsoms and Boykins vocational agricultural scholar, and he was a member of the Newsoms Advisory Council of this department of the Newsoms High School. Being extensively interested in farming and actively operating his farms, he was recognized as one of the best farmers in the entire county, having greatly improved the farms owned by him in the neighborhood and community and employing with the most successful results modern farm machinery and continually investing in improved live stock. Mr. Prince is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Drewry Prince, who was critically ill with pneumonia at the time of her husband’s death, and by four children, George, Elizabeth, Eppa, Jr., and Virginia Prince. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Annie M. Prince; two brothers, R.E. Prince of Norfolk and W.B. Prince of New York; a sister, Miss Lula Prince of Boykins; an uncle, George C. Pope of Franklin, and an aunt, Mrs. E.M. Darden of Norfolk, besides a wide and prominent family connection and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Newsoms cemetery Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the presence of a large company of friends, Masonic rites being used at the grave side by Masons from the home lodge and from Boykins, Courtland, Franklin and other places. Rev. A.K. Lambdin, Mr. Prince’s pastor, spoke feelingly of his useful life and offered prayer. The body bearers were: H.M. Drewry, W.B. Pope, Jno. B. Darden, Jr., Julian Worrell, R.M. Darden of Norfolk, F.E. Pope, J.B. Everett and R.F. Marks. The honorary pallbearers were: Jno. B. Darden, W.P. Gillette, Dr. W.B. Barham, Dr. B.A. Pope, L.L. Manry, S.W. Rawls, Paul Scarborough, R.B. Story, W.C. Nurney, J.T. Story, J.G. Barnes, W.W. White, H.A. Moore, L.W. McGrath, E. Beale Carter, R.W. Ferguson, R.C. Knight, W.P. Gray, R.S. Edwards and B.P. Woodard of Norfolk.
