BURTON JUSTICE RAY Funeral services for Dr. Burton Justice Ray, 82, were held in the Franklin Baptist Church Friday at 11 a.m. Dr. Ray, scientist, scholar, industrial executive and civic leader, died late Wednesday afternoon in his home of Clay Street. A native of Raleigh, he was a longtime resident of Franklin. His parents were John Edwin and Mrs. Finie Carter Ray. His widow is the former Sallie Shepherd Camp. He was educated at Wake Forest College, where he earned A.B. and M.A. degrees. He won a Ph.D degree in chemistry from Cornell University, N.Y. Initially, he was a practicing chemical consultant in Norfolk until 1917, when he moved to Franklin and became associated with Camp Manufacturing Co. He was a secretary and treasurer of the company until he retired in 1948. In 1961 Dr. Ray was designated First Citizen of Franklin, an award of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Franklin. Dr. Ray was an enthusiastic golfer and did much to develop the course at Cypress Cove Country Club here. Some years ago at the Club erected a golfers’ bench in his honor, bearing a bronze plaque with his name and an expression of appreciation for his sportsmanship and leadership. Dr. Ray served his county arduously during World War II as chairman of the Draft Board of Southampton County for five years. For that service he and other members of the Board were honored with certificates of merit from the Commonwealth of Virginia, presented by then Governor William M. Tuck at a ceremony in Norfolk. He was one of the founders of Franklin Concrete Products Corp. and its secretary and treasurer until death. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, a past chairman of its Deacons Board, church treasurer, and Sunday school superintendent. He was a former president of the Virginia Baptist Association and Virginia Baptist Orphanage and a member of Virginia Baptist Missions and Board of Education. He had served on the Town Council and was a former director of the Camp Foundation and a former president of Cypress Cove County Club and Franklin Rotary Club. Surviving are his widow, the former Sallie Shepherd Camp; two sons, Robert Camp Ray of Franklin and John Edwin Ray, III of New York; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery with W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Toy Savage Jr., Sol Rawls Jr., William M. Camp Jr., Clay Camp, James L.
