At the age of sixteen years he volunteered in the Confederate Army the latter part of the war, and served honorably until the end of the conflict. After he was discharged from the army he returned to his native county. On January 16th, 1872, he married Miss Mary Eugene Williams, and daughter of Nicholas and Mary Ann Williams, who was a most sympathetic wife and valuable helpmate. Mr. Rowe joined the Trinity Methodist Church while very young, and continued an active member of that church until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Rowe had born to them ten children, three of them dying very early in life, leaving three sons, J.N. Rowe of Petersburg, J.T. Rowe of Sebrell, and C.H. Rowe of Courtland, and four daughters, Mrs. G.C. Kirkland, Mrs. G.L. Bryant, Mrs. J.W. Whitehead and Mrs. R.N. Wells all of Courtland, Virginia, surviving him, with his widow, Mrs. Mary Williams Rowe. Those who knew Mr. Rowe best loved him most, and in his death Southampton County has lost a most valuable citizen. During his last illness he became helpless for quite a while and it was an inspiration to see his children take such tender care of their aged and helpless father. We wish them God speed. The pallbearers were W.S. Williams, W.H. Kirkland, C.C. Howell, W.L. Whitehead, E.V. Stephenson, W.N. Whitehead, Eddie Felts and Emmett R. Davis.
