RAY, WIDOW OF FORMER CAMP CO. OFFICER FRANKLIN - Mrs. Sallie Shepherd Camp Ray, 85, the widow of former Camp Co. executive Burton J. Ray, died Tuesday in a hospital. Her late husband was secretary, treasurer, and director of Camp Manufacturing Co. and Chesapeake-Camp Corp. He also was a research chemist in Norfolk for several years. Her parents were James L. and Mrs. Carrie Fountain Savage Camp, and she was born in Franklin. She was a lifelong member of Franklin Baptist Church. She was educated in Franklin Female Seminary, a private school, and was a graduate of Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C. She was a member of Franklin Book Club, Garden Club of Franklin, and Franklin Music Study Club. Survivors include two sons, Robert Camp Ray of Franklin and John E. Ray III of New Jersey; a brother James L. Camp, Jr. of Franklin; and two sisters, Mrs. Sol W. Rawls and Mrs. W. Eldridge Smith of Franklin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Franklin Baptist Church by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, with Wright Funeral Home in charge. The family will be at the home of Robert C. Ira D. Hudgins. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home has charge. Pallbearers were: Sol W. Rawls, Jr., William Camp, Clay Camp, Richard Ray, Robert Ray, and Paul Camp Marks. She was the widow of Dr. Burton J. Ray, who was secretary, treasurer and director of Camp Manufacturing Corp. predecessors of Union Camp Corp. She was the daughter of James L. Camp and Carrie Fountain Savage Camp, and a native of Franklin. She was all her life a devoted and active member of the Franklin Baptist Church. Mrs. Ray was educated at Franklin Female Seminary, a private school of that day, and was a graduate of Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C. She was a member of the Franklin Book Club, the Garden Club, and the Franklin Music Study Club. Surviving are two sons, Robert Camp Ray of Franklin and John E. Ray III of New Jersey; two sisters, Mrs. Sol W. Rawls and Mrs. W. Eldridge Smith; one brother James L. Camp Jr.,; all of Franklin; five great- grandchildren.
