RAIFORD ------ Almedia Bowden Raiford who [was] born in Isle in Wight county, November 7, 1848, and passed away at her home the 5th of January, 1920. She was the youngest child of a family of five children, having three sisters and one brother. The brother, E.E. Bowden, alone survives her. In early life she became a member of Antioch Christian Church, and during all the time of her connection with this communion, she was a most consistent member. On May 24, 1871, she was united in marriage to George W. Raiford. Soon after marriage she and her husband united with the Friends Church at Corinth, Southampton county, thus beginning their married life in unity of religious purpose and responsibility. She was the mother of ten children, six sons and four daughters. Her husband and two daughters have preceeded her to the Heavenly Home. She was a woman of strong character and to her motherhood was a sacred responsibility. She faithfully endeavored to impress upon her children the principles of peace and right conduct in their everyday lives. Her faith was mainfest in her good works. She has been a liberal giver, a kind neighbor, and her whole life has been characterized by beautiful simplicity. She was always loyal to the religious principles of her church and a stanch supporter of its interests, willing to sacrifice in order that good might be accomplished. For some years her life had been comparatively shut in, but she manifested much patience and submission, and maintained great interest in those about her. The immediate family, the relatives and the community felt keenly the loss of so devoted a mother and faithful friend. To her the end was peaceful. She quietly fell asleep. We believe that for her, earth has receded; Heaven advanced; God has called; and she has gone. The funeral services were conducted at Corinth Church on January 8th, at 12 noon, by Rev. A.E. Cloud, assisted by Rev. Byron L. Osborne. Her six sons, Hubert E., Hunter D., T. Philip, Rufus L., E. Jerome and E. Wistar Raiford were the pallbearers. The casket was preceded by eight grandsons, Earl Raiford, Theodore Raiford, Howard Babb, Walter Raiford, Elton Raiford, Herbert Babb, Rowland Babb and George Raiford, carrying the beautiful floral designs. Her brother, E.E. Bowden of Richmond, and the following nephews and nieces from a distance were present: E.J. Andrews, Mrs. John Kelbaugh, Mrs. J.T. Organ of Norfolk, W.C. Andrews of Zuni, Ernest Edwards and Mrs. G.C. Brothers of Whaleyville, Mrs. J.M. Smith, Messrs. James, Tyler and Livey Edwards of Franklin, Mrs. R.M. Herrin and Mrs. H.M. Rawls of Ivor. The body was laid to rest in the family buring ground. Almedia (BOWDEN; Mrs. George W.)
