Mrs. Raiford died in Philadelphia, where she had been residing with her husband, Dr. Morgan Raiford, who is connected with the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Raiford was a native of Sabot, Goochland County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Daves. For several years she worked for the Southampton County Welfare Department, where she made many friends by her sympathetic approach to the work she was doing. After her marriage to Dr. Raiford she moved to Franklin, becoming interested immediately in the religious and civic activities of the town. She assisted the various young people’s organizations and was a zealous worker in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, of which she was a member. When the Franklin Woman’s Club was organized, Mrs. Raiford was selected as the first president; and in this office she rendered outstanding service not only to the club but to the community. During the brief period of her illness all of the churches and several of the civic organizations offered special prayers for her recovery. She was a quiet, sweet and lovable lady who went about her task without complaining, hiding the strength of her personality by accomplishing magnificently her numerous duties. Mrs. Raiford left three children, Susan Davies Raiford, Daniel Morgan Raiford, and an infant daughter. The older children will be reared by Dr. and Mrs. Fletcher Raiford, while the baby will be cared for by E.J. Raiford of Petersburg, an uncle of Dr. Raiford. The funeral services, which were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery last Thursday afternoon, were attended by several hundred persons, and the innumerable floral designs, both at the grave and in the home, indicated the high regard in which she was held. It is difficult to understand why such a noble personality should have been taken at such a youthful age, but as someone has so aptly put it. "There are some things we are not supposed to understand." Those who were fortunate enough to know her will not quickly nor easily forget the splendid example of her beautiful spirit and the depth and quietude of her character.
